Remote School District Implements Live Online Speech Therapy to Provide Quality Service and Reduce Overall Costs

Union County School System, a rural district in Blairsville, GA serving about 2,700 K–12 students (including ~350 with IEPs), struggled to find and retain speech-language pathologists. Long travel distances between schools, heavy caseloads and a chronic SLP shortage made service delivery inefficient, costly and likely to hurt student outcomes.

In 2012 the district piloted PresenceLearning’s live online speech therapy with ten students and—after positive feedback—kept the service as the primary option for a select group. Virtual sessions reduced SLP travel and caseload pressure, proved easy to use, and delivered measurable gains: some students tested out of therapy or moved from individual to small-group sessions, prompting plans to expand the program.
