Case Study: Communisis doubles output and achieves zero-error operational excellence with Pitney Bowes

A Pitney Bowes Case Study

Preview of the Communisis Case Study

Communisis, in strategic partnership with Pitney Bowes, celebrates new business growth

Communisis, a UK‑headquartered leader in multi‑channel marketing and transactional print, won a ten‑year outsourcing contract to produce and mail statements for a major retail bank covering up to 30 million customers. The deal required consolidating multiple production sites into a single Copley Center of Excellence, but existing inserting and sorting equipment could not meet the bank’s quality, throughput and zero‑error SLAs. Communisis extended its long‑standing partnership with Pitney Bowes—deploying Pitney Bowes Mailstream Productivity Series and Mailstream Evolution inserters plus Vantage mail sorting and DFWorks/P/I software—to address the challenge.

Pitney Bowes delivered a single‑source mail and sorting platform, onsite engineering and professional services and worked jointly with Communisis using Six Sigma and lean techniques, process reengineering and operator retraining. The result was dramatic: high‑volume inserter throughput almost tripled, required output rates were doubled while maintaining 100% first‑time quality, postal sorting became 50% faster, and labor was halved (from two operators per machine to one), driving lower cost‑per‑pack and top European productivity rankings for Communisis. Pitney Bowes’ technology and onsite support were cited as central to these gains.
