Using Memsource at the Leipzig University The Pros and Cons

Memsource worked with Dr. Edgar Böhm from Leipzig University’s Institute of Applied Linguistics and Translatology to introduce its cloud-based CAT platform into a summer-semester course. Dr. Böhm’s challenge was to give all students hands-on experience of the full translation production chain — including project-manager tasks — while keeping user accounts and costs manageable, and to address common concerns about cloud security and subscription pricing.

The solution used Memsource’s university program and a tailored project setup that let students act in project-manager roles with a limited number of licenses. Students analyzed a prepared text and translation memory, produced translations, performed QA and exported deliverables; feedback highlighted the tool’s ease of use, cloud convenience and broad file support. Memsource also clarified pricing (flexible subscriptions vs costly desktop upgrades) and cloud security (owner-controlled access), and the course ran smoothly with 20+ engaged participants; Dr. Böhm plans to extend the workflow to cover assignment intake and invoicing.
