A Phrase Localization Platform Case Study
Cochrane is a global independent non‑profit that produces and updates systematic health reviews to help people make informed healthcare decisions. It translates English content into 15 languages through a decentralized network of 1,000+ mostly volunteer translators, handling roughly 100 articles and about 1 million translated words per month. Cochrane needed a flexible, intuitive translation system that preserves document context, restricts access by language, supports volunteers with varied availability and skill levels, and avoids wasting paid word count when language teams selectively translate content.
Cochrane implemented Memsource with REST API integrations to automate article and Drupal website workflows, role‑ and language‑based access via Business Units and SSO, project templates, webhooks, and machine translation (DeepL and Google) options. The result is fully automated data processing that reduces manual tasks and formatting issues, lowers project‑manager workload, centralizes work in the cloud, and speeds up translation through translation memory and MT—enabling Cochrane to translate more content faster while maintaining quality controls.
