Adapting to Online Learning at Zurich University of Applied Sciences

Zurich University of Applied Sciences’ School of Applied Linguistics, led by lecturer Martin Kappus, faced the sudden shift to fully online teaching during COVID-19. The move eliminated on-campus computer labs and made real‑time engagement and hands‑on guidance with CAT tools much harder, creating a challenge for courses that rely on collaborative translation practice and in‑the‑moment troubleshooting.

ZHAW adapted by using Memsource’s cloud‑based Academic Program and by asking students to submit screen recordings of their work so instructors could “look over their shoulder” virtually. Memsource’s cross‑platform reliability, centralized resources and termbases made remote group work and project-based learning seamless, keeping practical translation training aligned with industry workflows and preserving student interaction and peer learning.
