American Metals Supply optimizes inventory to adapt to change

American Metals Supply (AMS) is a family-owned wholesaler of sheet and coil steel, prefabricated duct and HVAC products operating from eight locations across 12 states. Facing falling raw steel values, shifting job-site availability, and unpredictable demand, AMS needed to trim excess inventory, reposition stock between branches, and tighten order and delivery coordination to avoid losses and preserve cash flow.

Working with Phocas, AMS integrated open sales and purchase data and created a projected inventory level (PIL) measure in dollars and pounds, plus dashboards that show months on hand and months PIL by line and branch. Combined with scorecards, AR tracking, DSO metrics and alerts for overdue tickets, the solution let AMS reduce surplus inventory, reallocate stock to where it’s needed, improve cash flow and responsiveness, and better match deliveries to customer availability.
