Land O'Lakes, a farmer-owned cooperative, faced a significant challenge at the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic when sudden market shifts left some areas of the business with idle talent while others were overwhelmed with demand. Tasked by the CEO to rapidly redeploy employees, Senior Manager of Talent Acquisition Renee Robideau realized the company lacked the infrastructure for such internal mobility. To address this, they turned to their existing vendor, Phenom, to explore its internal talent marketplace capabilities.

Phenom's platform provided the technology to launch an internal talent marketplace and gig program. The solution allowed Land O'Lakes employees to create profiles, list their skills, and browse for internal projects, while managers could search for talent based on needed skills. Initially, success was measured qualitatively through satisfaction surveys with participants. The program aimed to improve employee engagement, skill development, and cost savings by leveraging internal talent before seeking external resources, with plans to track quantitative metrics like cost savings and participation rates in the future.
