The Horton Group, a 300‑employee insurance and benefits firm with nine offices, set out in 2007 to shift its workplace culture toward healthier lifestyles and boost participation in wellness programs. Leadership found the biggest challenge was simply getting employees started on healthier habits across work and home — from swapping Donut Fridays for healthier options to encouraging activity during the day.

To address this, Horton formed a wellness committee, secured CEO support, and partnered with Virgin Pulse to run a rewards‑based online program that integrates tracking devices, incentives, and a wide range of on‑site and virtual activities (walking groups, fitness classes, financial wellness, annual events). The approach drove strong engagement: 93% enrollment, 95% device use, 53% meeting recommended activity levels, near‑universal points earning and site logins, and measurable health and claims improvements (fewer diabetes, heart and stroke complications) alongside reported gains in employee morale and productivity.
