Promote Employee Well-being to Drive Productivity at Work and Beyond

BBVA, a U.S. banking franchise with about 11,000 employees across seven states, sought to curb rising healthcare costs and boost productivity by promoting employee wellbeing. An initial wellness programme launched in 2009 failed to gain traction because it lacked effective marketing and communications, leaving participation low despite generous incentives.

BBVA partnered with Virgin Pulse in 2010 and revitalized the effort with targeted communications, health fairs, on-site champions, executive buy-in (including C‑suite wearables), and simplified incentives after dropping a participation fee. The programme now enrolls over 70% of employees, with 74% meeting recommended activity levels, an average of 9,242 steps per day, more than $4 million paid in incentives, and a stronger culture of wellbeing that supports productivity and attendance.
