MaineGeneral Health, the largest private employer in Maine’s Kennebec Valley with about 4,000 employees and service to 88 communities, had a strong coaching-based wellness program that kept costs flat. Facing a shift from care management to population health, the organization needed a way to deepen daily engagement, broaden incentives, and extend wellbeing beyond its workforce into the community.

MaineGeneral partnered with Virgin Pulse to launch a mobile-first platform offering daily cards, habit tracking, social features and a 150-person champion network, plus the ability for employees to invite family and friends. In year one the program hit 72% participation (vs. a 50% goal), averaged 180 interactions per member per month and 8,264 daily steps, and drove high achievement across BMI categories — demonstrating stronger, community-wide engagement and measurable behavior change.
