Ascend Performance Materials, a Houston‑headquartered global manufacturer with about 2,300 employees across five U.S. sites, sought to shift employee behavior toward healthier lifestyles and build engagement across a geographically dispersed workforce. Wanting to move beyond traditional wellness tactics, Ascend emphasized family involvement and needed a social, accessible platform to connect employees, encourage activity and nutrition changes, and sustain long‑term engagement.
Ascend implemented Virgin Pulse in 2012, using its social networking, localized campaigns and incentive structure (including up to $400 annually and $100 for screenings/HRA/financial programs) to drive participation. The program achieved 81% employee enrollment and 46% spouse participation; 73% of participating employees and 63% of participating spouses now meet recommended physical activity levels. The initiative earned local and industry recognition, improved health outcomes (including early detection of serious risks) and strengthened an active, connected workplace culture.
