Building the Case for Employee Safety and Wellbeing

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution supporting national security that has long invested in employee health and wellbeing. Despite an on-site Wellness Center and health programs, participation varied and many efforts focused narrowly on physical activity. LANL’s two main challenges were to build the case for a holistic wellbeing program that fosters lasting habits and to reduce workplace safety injuries.

LANL partnered with Virgin Pulse in 2014 after an economic analysis and launched a personalized digital wellbeing platform, backed by targeted communication and a Safety Wellness Action Team (SWAT). The program quickly reached 60% enrollment in month one and 67% to date, producing more than 100 success stories and collective weight loss, while contributing to major safety gains: 70% fewer repetitive trauma injuries, 68% fewer slips/trips/falls, and 47% fewer push/pull/lift injuries. The effort helped LANL win the DOE Voluntary Protection Program Star Award and positioned the lab as a model for other DOE sites.
