A Pegasystems Case Study
The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) faced a legacy IT challenge: a heavily customized commercial system in place since 2006 that was costly to upgrade, poorly adopted because it didn’t fit user workflows, and acted only as a data-collection tool rather than an intelligent BPM suite. Disparate directorate platforms prevented sharing and reuse of applications across the enterprise, and AFRL needed a scalable, secure solution that would support its global workforce of about 10,000 and meet defensive cyber requirements.
AFRL selected an open, flexible platform (Pega) that lets the enterprise inherit and configure applications for local needs, provides a unified developer experience, and improves decision making. AFRL is prototyping four core apps—task management, POM planning, work‑unit management, and program management—with plans to migrate more than 100 existing apps. Early results include better data quality, reduced reliance on spreadsheets, improved visibility through reporting and visualization, faster informed decisions, and greater reuse and agility across the organization.
