Case Study: Bolt accelerates expansion and boosts conversions with PayPal

A PayPal Case Study

Preview of the Bolt Case Study

Bolt’s lightning-fast growth and PayPal’s power take the world by storm

Bolt, founded in 2013 by Markus Villig, has grown from a 19-year-old’s startup recruiting 50 drivers into a global mobility platform with over 100 million customers in 45 countries offering ride-hailing, micromobility, car-sharing and delivery. As Bolt expanded into Western Europe, it encountered more complex payment demands and EU Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) rules, so it needed additional payment options to meet local preferences and regulatory requirements.

Bolt integrated PayPal Express Checkout to provide a secure, SCA-compliant payment flow with fast onboarding and ongoing market support. Since launching in Germany, PayPal captured about 50% share at checkout for Bolt, drove an immediate increase in approval rates, and delivered strong retention (82% repeat use among PayPal customers), helping Bolt scale across markets with PayPal available in 200+ regions and 25 currencies.
