FUNKE Digital, the digital arm of the FUNKE Media Group and an early adopter of in-feed, in-article placements and Outbrain’s Smartfeed in Germany, sought to boost revenue and engagement from its existing native ad inventory—including on Google AMP pages—while preserving a good user experience.
They deployed Outbrain’s Optimization Engine to automatically tailor the visual design and format of native recommendations for different user groups (dynamic images, headline size/color, etc.). Within one month the test drove a 52% increase in RPM for in-article placements and a 47% rise in paid CTR, building on earlier gains such as a 69% lift in organic CTR.
