Rakuten Ensures Uninterrupted Online Shopping, Increases User Satisfaction, and Reduces Operating Costs

Rakuten, operator of Japan’s largest online shopping mall Rakuten Ichiba with tens of millions of users and thousands of stores, needed a high‑performance, secure, reliable, and scalable database platform to eliminate bottlenecks, cut downtime, accelerate application delivery, consolidate membership and sales data into a private cloud, and reduce operating costs.

Rakuten implemented Oracle Exadata (full and half racks) with Oracle Active Data Guard, Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance, and advanced monitoring and management tools. The new platform delivered seamless scalability, nearly eliminated scheduled maintenance downtime (from monthly 5–6 hours to almost zero), lowered operating and licensing costs through a DBaaS/pay‑as‑you‑go model, improved storage efficiency with compression, simplified system management, and boosted application rollout speed and user satisfaction.
