South Australian Medical Research Institute Launches New State-of-the-Art Healthcare Initiative on NetSuite

The South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI), an independent public medical research institute in Adelaide, needed a cost-effective, scalable business platform as it expanded operations, secured more funding, added researchers and prepared to move into a new building. Relying on Excel, paper workflows and an outsourced accounting service risked inefficiency and high capital and maintenance costs from disparate on‑premise systems.

SAHMRI went live on NetSuite in July 2011, replacing manual processes and outsourced accounting with a single cloud system that supports rapid growth (from about 10 staff in 2011 to 600 by 2014). NetSuite delivers per-project financial monitoring and multi-level reporting across a A$100M budget, real-time budget vs. actuals for seven research themes, stronger auditability for funders, streamlined procurement from ~300 suppliers, and cloud mobility for the institute’s move — all at a fraction of the cost of a competing SAP option.
