Growing a Social Enterprise: Found Animals Foundation Becomes Pet’s Best Friend

Found Animals Foundation is a Los Angeles–based nonprofit social enterprise founded by Dr. Gary Michelson to reunite pets and owners via a microchip registry. As the organization scaled nationwide and added adoption centers, events and grantmaking, its mix of philanthropy and revenue-generating lines of business—across multiple divisions and locations—was hampered by a homegrown database and QuickBooks, creating operational complexity and limiting customer-facing features.

To modernize operations and better serve shelters and pet owners, the Foundation implemented NetSuite Financials and NetSuite CRM (supported by an Oracle NetSuite Social Impact donation), replacing QuickBooks and enabling new services such as text and email lost-pet alerts. The platform supported ongoing innovation—annual microchip revenue growth since the 2013 implementation—and helped the Foundation launch initiatives like a Mars Petcare accelerator to expand registry reach and owner engagement.
