Spreadshirt, an international marketplace for custom apparel and designs, undertook a full site rebrand in 2013 to showcase its marketplace more prominently. Creative director Do Kil faced the challenge of ensuring the redesign actually boosted user engagement and conversions, and relied on the team’s established Optimizely-driven testing culture and past experiment learnings to validate design choices rather than guessing.
Using Optimizely, the team A/B tested individual elements of the new homepage—most notably a pared‑down, prominent “Start Selling” call‑to‑action—while tracking 25 micro- and macro‑conversion goals (including CTA clicks and order confirmation views). The streamlined variation drove a ~6x (606%) lift in Start Selling conversions, a 4% increase in orders, and an 8% improvement in overall engagement, results that the team is using to guide further tests across the site.
