New search algorithm improves Bigstock’s entire download funnel

Bigstock, a stock-image marketplace, wanted to make it faster and easier for customers to find the right images—search is the entry point for most users, and misspellings were often returning irrelevant results. The team hypothesized that replacing their exact-match autosuggest with a “fuzzy” autosuggest that corrected common typos would improve search success and overall conversions.

Using Optimizely, Bigstock A/B tested the exact vs. fuzzy autosuggest, tracked result selections and integrated Google Analytics to measure downstream behavior. The fuzzy variant won: visitors selected suggested results 9.6% more often, images added to cart rose ~6.5%, downloads increased ~3.2%, and overall conversions improved roughly 10% (fuzzy conversion rate 18.5% vs. 16.9% for the original).
