Compass is a real‑estate technology company powering tools for 15k+ agents and millions of daily users. Their in‑house Experiments API (simple true/false flags) became unreliable and too limited for targeted rollouts, multi‑variant tests, and robust analysis, so the product and engineering organization needed a scalable, low‑maintenance solution to safely release and learn from features.
Compass adopted Optimizely Full Stack and built an internal Optimizely‑as‑a‑service (a thin wrapper over the SDK) with a pragmatic identity strategy, Segment integration (including a small frontend stub for tracking), and a Koa middleware to aid QA. In four months the integration was running in production across multiple projects, enabled a clear deprecation path for the old API, produced reusable boilerplate and developer support (training, office hours, Slack), and delivered reliable feature rollouts and experimentation with minimal ongoing maintenance.
