A OpenGov Case Study
Provincetown, MA is a small coastal municipality (pop. ~3,000; annual budget ~$40M) that struggled with a paper‑based, spreadsheet‑driven budget process. Finance staff relied on a shared drive, 25+ Excel files and many Word documents, printing and distributing reports that were out of date almost immediately, creating major internal inefficiencies and time drains during budget preparation.
The town implemented OpenGov Budgeting & Performance and OpenGov Stories, moving to a cloud platform that centralized budget‑to‑actual data, performance measures, and public storytelling. As a result, employees spend less time copying and distributing reports, budget information is accurate and updated in real time for on‑the‑fly changes, stakeholders can access what they need when they need it, and citizens are more informed and engaged through Provcintown’s Story Builder.
