How America’s Largest Town “Cut Red Tape” with OpenGov

The Town of Hempstead, NY, America’s largest township, needed a safer and more efficient way to reopen restaurants and handle permitting during the COVID-19 pandemic. Its Building Department wanted to reduce red tape, speed approvals, and support businesses while continuing essential public services, using OpenGov permitting and licensing software.

OpenGov implemented modern workflow software that made permitting fully virtual and streamlined inspections and approvals. As a result, the Town processed nearly 200 applications in the first month, cut outdoor-dining permit turnaround time from five days to three, and expanded the portal to five additional permit types, helping businesses reopen faster and restarting needed revenue for both the town and local businesses.
