Enhanced Logistics for Direct-Store Delivery of “Trash and Trinkets” Spells Serious Success for Novelty, Inc

Novelty, Inc., founded in 1980, supplies impulse-buy “novelty” items to 11,000 U.S. convenience stores and 800 in Canada through a direct-store delivery (DSD) Guaranteed Sale program. With nearly constant movement of drivers and route professionals servicing stores on 1–4 week cycles via a two-tier distribution network, the company needed a way to manage territories and routing more efficiently to cut rising mileage and transportation costs after a third‑party solution proved inadequate.

Novelty implemented the Omnitracs Roadnet suite—Territory Planner, Roadnet, Info Center and MobileCast—to balance territories, plan routes in advance, enforce routes in the field and gain routing visibility. The changes yielded major gains: a reported 19% reduction in miles, possible missed time windows cut by 50%, route consolidation savings, significant service improvements and an 8% mileage reduction in one newly optimized territory.
