Cargo Transporters Reduces Crashes and Successfully Defends Against Accident Claims with Critical Event Recording Data

Cargo Transporters, a Claremont, NC–based carrier with a 450‑truck fleet, faced costly critical‑event accidents and wanted to reduce hard braking and stability incidents, more easily identify high‑risk drivers, and improve driver communication so drivers would arrive home safely.

In December 2008 Cargo deployed Omnitracs’ Critical Event Reporting (CER)—near‑real‑time alerts with second‑by‑second sensor data—then tuned the system (e.g., hard‑braking triggers only above 40 mph) to reduce false alerts. The program produced immediate behavior improvement, delivered nine months (36 million miles) without a DOT‑recordable accident, helped clear the company of liability in two accidents and a freight‑damage claim, and lowered accident severity, costs, and operational burden.
