Carbon Express Owner Says E-logs the ‘Best Thing to Happen in Trucking’

Carbon Express, founded by Steve Rush, is a Wharton, N.J.-based tanker carrier that spent decades operating with a culture of paper-log noncompliance driven by competitive pressure and tight margins. After a 2006 wake-up call from his safety director, Rush committed to change—addressing chronic hours-of-service violations and the operational instability that was putting safety and the business at risk.

The company implemented electronic logging devices (Omnitracs) with a six-month side-by-side rollout, moved to day cabs with hotel layovers, and used real-time log data in its dispatch/TMS and pricing. The changes forced more disciplined scheduling and pricing, improved driver dignity and pay, and drove measurable results: fleet growth from 23 to 49 trucks, single-digit turnover, zero DOT‑reportable accidents in 2015 across more than five million miles, and stronger customer confidence ahead of the ELD mandate.
