Norton Healthcare, a Louisville-based health system, faced the common challenges of the healthcare sector: long hours, emotional strain, and the need to retain and fully engage staff who seek fulfillment through meaningful work. Leadership set out to move employees from being merely satisfied to truly engaged by creating a culture of appreciation and implementing a formal recognition strategy.
Partnering with O.C. Tanner, Norton launched the centralized "Recognition of You" program and an Employee Experience team that used focus groups, training, and solution design to embed recognition across the employee lifecycle. The effort rapidly increased recognition activity and drove measurable outcomes: engagement survey results rose from the 55th to the 83rd percentile in the health care market, one location earned a national HCAHPS award, and overall turnover moved into the 70th percentile.
