Case Study: The Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) achieves higher employee engagement and retention with O.C. Tanner's online recognition platform

A O.C. Tanner Case Study

Preview of the BDC Case Study

Engaging employees through multidirectional recognition

The Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC), Canada’s only bank devoted exclusively to entrepreneurs, wanted to modernize employee recognition for its 2,300 staff after a 2016 brand refresh. Already recognized as a top employer, BDC aimed to move from top-down awards to a multidirectional, peer-to-peer recognition culture that worked across provinces and in both French and English.

BDC partnered with O.C. Tanner to launch exclamat!on and a custom YearbookMC—an accessible, bilingual online platform that lets employees give timely recognition and celebrate milestones. The program reinforced BDC’s culture, improved engagement and retention, strengthened onboarding (including a one-year celebration with personalized YearbookMCs), and helped make appreciation a routine part of work across the organization.
