Virgin Trains, operator of the vital West Coast Main Line linking London, Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow and Edinburgh, needed a long-term partner to deliver high-speed, reliable onboard WiFi for all passengers while trains travel up to 125 mph through areas with unreliable cellular coverage. They engaged Nomad Digital to provide a scalable passenger connectivity solution and related services.
Nomad Digital deployed a pioneering solution combining 3G and purpose-built WiMAX coverage-switching technology, installed on 52 Class 390 Pendolino and 21 Class 220/221 Voyager trains and in First Class lounges, plus a bespoke landing page (with T-Mobile), 24-hour service desk support and a Fleet Manager for live fleet and equipment monitoring. The result is a consistent, high-speed WiFi service (free in First Class, pay-as-you-go in standard), improved passenger access to travel info/support, operational monitoring and future-ready scalability — contributing to strong passenger satisfaction (Virgin recorded a 91% overall rating in the 2015 National Rail Passenger Survey).
