A New Relic Case Study
Wooga is one of Europe’s largest social game developers, building high‑traffic titles like Monster World and Bubble Island that together attract millions of daily users. Their games run on varied stacks (RoR/PHP, MySQL/Redis, EC2 and dedicated hosts) and generate extreme, volatile loads (thousands of requests/sec and hundreds of millions of daily requests) with an unusual 1:1 read/write ratio; small engineering teams (2–3 people) needed live visibility without adding overhead, and standard profilers and caching approaches were ineffective.
Wooga deployed New Relic RPM (Gold) to monitor live transactions, traces and SQL parameters across all environments. RPM quickly pinpointed slow calls and unindexed queries, revealed extreme usage patterns, and enabled head‑to‑head comparisons of hosting options. As a result wooga improved throughput by ~30%, increased cluster capacity up to 20%, scaled Monster World from 300k to 1.1M DAU, reduced hosting costs, and adopted RPM as a standard tool for ongoing releases and tuning.
