Video-on-Demand Service HOOQ Delivers a Million Stories to a Billion People with the Help of New Relic

HOOQ is a Singapore-based video-on-demand service founded in 2015 and backed by Sony Pictures, Warner Bros., and Singtel. Rapid user growth across a hybrid-cloud environment meant the company needed end-to-end visibility into application and streaming performance without diverting engineering resources from product development.

HOOQ deployed New Relic APM, Mobile, Browser and Insights to instrument APIs, mobile clients and user funnels, and to build company-wide dashboards and alerts. The result was a ~40% improvement in response times (endpoint latency down from ~500ms to under 200ms), core playback API latency of 5–10ms producing 1–2 second video startups, and a 60–75% reduction in Heartbeat API instances (from 40 to ~8–9), cutting infrastructure costs and enabling faster, data-informed decisions.
