Tribune Technology Monitors Performance of 50+ Web Properties with New Relic

Tribune Technology, the digital arm of the Tribune Company, manages the online operations for eight major newspapers, 23 broadcast stations and dozens of partner sites that together draw more than 60 million unique visitors and 400–500 million pageviews per month. Running a complex, multi‑platform stack (Ruby, Java, .NET, PHP, Oracle, MySQL, etc.) across on‑premise and cloud infrastructure, the team lacked real‑time application instrumentation and struggled to quickly identify production bottlenecks during incidents.

In 2011 Tribune implemented New Relic to monitor backend services and 50+ consumer sites, using dashboards, Apdex and Transaction Traces to pinpoint slowdowns at the app, cache, database or external‑call layers. The result was faster, more precise troubleshooting, reduced downtime, better capacity planning and time savings that directly improved the online experience for readers.
