The Government of India Calls on New Relic to Support the Rollout of its COVID-19 Contact Tracing App

The Government of India’s National Informatics Centre (NIC) led the rapid development and rollout of Aarogya Setu, a nationwide COVID-19 contact-tracing app built in just 15 days with help from volunteers across industry and academia. Faced with unprecedented demand—peaking at 7 million server requests per minute and achieving 50 million downloads in 13 days—the team needed reliable monitoring, performance and scalability to serve a population of 1.4 billion.

New Relic provided full‑stack observability (APM, Infrastructure, Browser, Mobile, Insights) through its COVID‑19 relief program, giving the team real‑time visibility into performance and user experience. That visibility enabled fast identification and resolution of issues, confident scaling and rapid updates, and helped Aarogya Setu reach over 140 million installs, support 10% of India’s population and aid in identifying more than 3,000 COVID‑19 hotspots.
