RunKeeper Reduces Operational Costs and Time Spent Troubleshooting with New Relic

RunKeeper is a mobile fitness platform that helps runners and other users track workouts and progress; since its 2008 launch it has grown to more than 27 million users. As the engineering team expanded and the company deployed features multiple times per day, application performance became unpredictable—new features that worked in test could behave very differently in production—and RunKeeper lacked a single, deep technical view to quickly find root causes across servers, mobile apps and third‑party services.

RunKeeper implemented New Relic for server and mobile monitoring, bringing metrics, plugins and real user traces into one dashboard so teams could pinpoint issues down to the line of code and see how many users were affected. The result: investigation time dropped from about an hour to under 10 minutes, unnecessary S3 calls were removed (cutting hosting costs by as much as 4x), server response time improved ~80%, DOM load time fell up to 7x, and teams can deploy and validate fixes far more confidently.
