Movember Scales to Meet Global Demand with a Little Help from New Relic

Movember is a global nonprofit that runs an annual month‑long fundraising campaign where participants grow mustaches to raise awareness for men’s health. The campaign drives extreme seasonal traffic — in 2011 Movember.com saw over 100 million page views and up to 15,000 concurrent users, with expectations of ~160 million page views and 30,000 concurrent users in 2012 — forcing the team to scale a largely idle infrastructure cost‑effectively across managed hosting and AWS.

By deploying New Relic alongside their managed private and cloud infrastructure, Movember gained real‑time visibility for functional and capacity testing, rapid anomaly detection, and proactive performance tuning. That monitoring helped keep the site highly available during peak periods, preserving registrations and donations (and thereby funding more men’s health initiatives) while enabling the organization to scale reliably and efficiently.
