A New Relic Case Study
Chegg is a U.S. digital-first education company that provides on-demand study aids, tutoring and textbook services to college students via an AWS-based platform running hundreds of hosts, about 80% containerized, and more than 500 production services. Facing high user expectations (peak usage on Sunday nights) and a rapidly growing, distributed microservices estate on Amazon ECS and AWS Lambda, Chegg needed reliable instrumentation and monitoring to ensure uptime, resilience and fast cross-team incident resolution.
Using the New Relic platform (APM, Infrastructure, Insights, Browser, Mobile and Logs), Chegg gained end-to-end visibility across teams, consolidated traces and logs, and standardized KPIs and alerting. The result: New Relic became the backbone of monitoring (about 80% of alerts), MTTR fell ~88% from 197 minutes to 24 minutes, troubleshooting was streamlined with integrated logs and traces, and performance improvements (for example, CloudFront reduced Australian page loads from ~11s to ~7s) helped ensure a higher-quality digital experience for students.
