NEC and Netcracker Complete Highly Successful SDN-Enabled vCPE Trial at Telekom Austria Group

Telekom Austria Group, a leading communications provider in Central and Eastern Europe with about 23 million customers, partnered with NEC and Netcracker to address the challenge of moving complex IP functionality out of residential gateways and into the operator cloud. The goal was to speed time‑to‑market for new services, simplify IPv6 rollout, support third‑party virtual network functions (VNFs) for features like parental control and DLNA, and reduce capital and operating costs while preparing for live virtualized deployments.

NEC and Netcracker delivered an end‑to‑end SDN‑enabled vCPE solution—combining vCPE, an SDN controller, service and network orchestration, and multi‑vendor VNFs—that demonstrated real‑time, on‑demand instantiation and route modification. The successful trial validated migration of gateway functions to the cloud, enabled self‑care portals and new service offerings (firewall, parental controls, media streaming), reduced operational complexity for IPv6, and set the stage for commercial rollout with lower capex/opex and faster service delivery.
