Swisscom Builds its New Application Cloud PaaS for Microservices with Cloud Foundry, Docker, and MongoDB Enterprise Advanced

Swisscom, Switzerland’s largest communications provider, transformed itself into a cloud services provider by building the Application Cloud PaaS to enable developers and enterprises to deploy cloud‑native microservices at scale. The challenge was to offer a secure, standards‑based platform that supports stateful services and meets strong local data‑sovereignty and customer demand for a non‑relational database option.

Swisscom implemented an open stack — Cloud Foundry on OpenStack/KVM, Docker containers, ScaleIO storage and Flocker for persistent volumes — and integrated MongoDB Enterprise Advanced via a Cloud Foundry service broker and Ops Manager. The result: rapid adoption (over 2,000 database containers within months, more than half running MongoDB), enterprise customers like dormakaba onboarded, and a differentiated Swiss‑hosted MongoDB Enterprise‑as‑a‑Service offering with advanced security, monitoring and backup capabilities.
