A MongoDB Case Study
Edmunds.com, launched in 1995 as a leading online automotive information and car-shopping resource, faced a move away from relational databases in 2011 to address performance, horizontal scalability, and the operational overhead of Oracle RDBMS. The company needed a more flexible, developer-friendly data platform to handle diverse, semi-structured datasets and to give engineers greater control from build to runtime.
Working with implementation partner EPAM Systems, Edmunds adopted MongoDB as the system of record for its publishing workflow and as the backbone for apps like dealer analytics, ad sales management, ratings/reviews, and user registration. MongoDB’s document model and low operational footprint enabled rapid development, easy setup in Chef-managed environments, and support for continuous delivery (reducing release-to-production cycles to under 30 minutes), resulting in faster deployments, higher developer productivity, and improved real-time analytics for dealers and advertisers.
