UN OCHA - Customer Case Study

The United Nations’ Humanitarian Data Exchange (HDX), created by OCHA in 2014, is an open-source data marketplace designed to remove the “sand in the gears” of humanitarian operations — fragmented, paper-based and hard-to-use data — so relief organizations can share and access usable datasets quickly. HDX needed an analytics framework to measure both data supply (contributors) and demand (field users) and to prove the platform’s impact to partner organizations and decision-makers.

HDX built a central repository and adopted Mixpanel’s event-driven analytics to track contributor and consumer behavior, create KPIs, and surface a North Star metric: usage by field offices (currently ~30%). With dashboards, monthly analytics reviews and contributor reporting, HDX increased transparency and engagement, helped partners see the value of sharing datasets, and improved data-driven coordination in crises — while preparing to expand impact through the Centre for Humanitarian Data.
