Optimising Legal Processes and Enhancing Collaboration

British American Tobacco (BAT), a leading global tobacco company, faced a challenge: its legal department operated outside the company’s rigorous purchase-order and spend-tracking culture, leaving them reactive to outside counsel invoices and lacking visibility and control over legal spend. BAT needed a way to proactively analyse costs, standardise legal workflows and bring outside counsel under tighter budgetary governance.

Partnering with Mitratech, BAT implemented the TeamConnect enterprise legal management system and applied Prince2 project-management principles to break matters into phased “products” with Responsible In‑House Counsels (RICs) overseeing budgets. Migrating processes and data into TeamConnect enabled real-time reporting, better vendor collaboration and earlier risk detection—driving measurable efficiency gains, strong adoption by internal and external counsel, improved budget control and a reduction in overall legal spend.
