A Mitel Case Study
The University of the Witwatersrand (Wits University), Johannesburg’s largest higher-education institution, faced an ageing analogue telephony system that was costly, unsupported and unable to meet modern needs like mobility and hybrid work. The university needed a migration to a resilient IP-based unified communications solution with minimal disruption to campus life, so the rollout had to occur between semesters and maintain continuity for students and staff.
Mitel and a long-term local distributor implemented MiVoice Business, MiCollab, MiContact Center and related components in a phased four-month deployment hosted across Wits’ two data centres. The new SIP-based, highly available UCC platform supports 8,100 users (6,600 MiCollab users), 54 contact‑centre agents and ~2,000 student IP phones, enables secure remote work, omnichannel student engagement, integrations (Teams, CRM) and significant ongoing support cost savings — delivering improved CX, mobility and a strong five‑year ROI.
