United Service Organization - Customer Case Study

United Service Organization of Metropolitan Washington (USO‑Metro) operates airport service lounges at BWI, Reagan National (DCA) and Dulles (IAD), providing amenities and support to military personnel and their families—serving over 110,000 visitors in 2009 (69,603 at BWI alone). Facing end‑of‑life equipment and working with a limited operating budget, USO‑Metro needed a secure, cost‑effective phone system that offered cordless mobility and reliable international and domestic voice service so service members could privately contact loved ones during long pre‑flight wait times.

USO‑Metro and Verizon replaced the aging phones with Aastra SIP‑DECT and Verizon Hosted VoIP: BWI received two SIP‑DECT access points and 30 handsets (supporting up to 16 simultaneous calls) and Dulles and National each received one access point and five handsets. The DECT solution delivered enterprise‑grade reliability, interference‑free wireless voice, extended battery life and SIP interoperability; deployments were rolled out and supported by Verizon, and guest surveys consistently rank the phones among the lounge’s most valued amenities.
