UFRGS, the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in Porto Alegre, is a large, multi-campus institution serving about 30,000 people daily across three campuses on nine sites. The university needed to cut intersite communications costs, consolidate telecom onto a single system, centralize management of remote sites, migrate to IP telephony, and be ready for unified communications.

UFRGS migrated its legacy MD110 system to Aastra MX-ONE®, enabling a smooth evolution to VoIP and SIP terminals while preserving existing gateways and equipment. The new platform integrated all nine remote sites under one system, leveraged existing maintenance know-how, delivered mobility and fixed-mobile integration, and reduced telecom costs—positioning the university to roll out UC features like chat, presence, and video.
