A Mitel Case Study
The San Francisco Giants, a Major League Baseball team, faced a major communications challenge: in 2008 they topped the league in telecom costs because an expensive Centrex landline system drove high long‑distance and service fees. At the same time MLB was standardizing a unified communications solution across all 30 ballparks that demanded security, speed and reliability beyond their existing setup.
The Giants replaced Centrex with ShoreTel (now Mitel) MiVoice Connect VoIP, cutting communications costs by about $500,000 in the first year and saving an estimated $5 million over a decade. The new system simplified moves/adds/changes, supported hundreds of full‑time and seasonal staff with minimal management time, improved game‑day and instant‑replay communications, and enhanced fan safety through emergency phones and location‑aware alerts — a solution MLB has since rolled out league‑wide.
