Rakuten Group Secures Sensitive Data with Virtual Desktop Infrastructure

Rakuten Group, a major Japanese e-commerce and internet company, faced the significant challenge of securing its sensitive corporate data against external threats, especially as it integrated newly acquired organizations. To address the assumption that employee home networks and devices could be compromised, they partnered with Microsoft Corporation to implement a secure Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) solution using Windows Server 2016 with Remote Desktop Services.

The solution from Microsoft provided a highly segregated and secure environment where only display images and user input are transmitted, preventing malware propagation and data leakage. This enabled secure BYOD access for employees and resulted in a more maintainable desktop environment for 7,000 virtual machines. Rakuten found the Microsoft solution to be superior in a rigorous evaluation, citing its advanced security features like Shielded Virtual Machines and its cost-effectiveness, which led them to choose it over a competitor.
