A Microsoft Corporation Case Study

Preview of the Dell Case Study

Dell increases database query performance by up to 12 times with upgrade to SQL Server 2017

Dell, a global manufacturer with about 25,000 Microsoft SQL Server databases supporting more than 1,500 applications, needed faster access to data, better database management, and lower costs. The company also wanted to speed development and testing by making new SQL Server capabilities easier for teams to use. Dell worked with Microsoft Corporation and upgraded its custom tools, SQL Dashboard and SQL Grid, to SQL Server 2017 and Power BI Report Server.

With Microsoft Corporation’s SQL Server 2017, Dell implemented features such as In-Memory OLTP, adaptive query processing, Automatic Plan Correction, distributed availability groups, and built-in graph databases. The results included database processing time dropping from eight hours to 40 minutes in one case, access to Machine Learning Services in about an hour instead of two to three months, and query performance improving by up to 12 times. Dell also gained better insights and reduced costs by replacing multiple third-party tools with Microsoft Corporation’s platform.
