A Microsoft Corporation Case Study
Dell, a leading high-tech manufacturer, sought to dramatically increase the performance and reliability of its Dell.com e-commerce site to handle traffic from 10,000 to up to 1 million concurrent users, particularly during peak shopping periods. To overcome performance limitations caused by database locks, Dell turned to Microsoft and its SQL Server 2014 product with In-Memory OLTP technology.
By migrating mission-critical databases to Microsoft SQL Server 2014, Dell utilized memory-optimized tables to eliminate locking constraints. The Microsoft solution delivered astounding results, speeding database performance by up to nine times and doubling application throughput. This also enabled Dell to reduce time spent on database issues by 77 percent, cut operational costs, and maintain 99.99 percent availability for its online storefront.
