Airline Uses Tablets, Cloud Services to Offer More Engaging In-Flight Entertainment

Alaska Airlines sought to differentiate itself in the competitive airline industry by enhancing passenger experience with a more engaging and innovative in-flight entertainment (IFE) system. The challenge was to deploy a solution that was lightweight, scalable, and secure to protect high-value content, all while minimizing aircraft weight and avoiding a costly system-wide upgrade.

Microsoft Corporation, working with its partners, provided the solution by deploying 7,000 tablets running Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry, with Microsoft Azure Data Factory used to track and analyze usage data. This implementation allowed Alaska Airlines to offer a fresh, enjoyable, and secure entertainment experience on every flight. The results were highly positive, with flight attendants reporting that customers loved the tablets, leading to increased customer satisfaction and plans to deploy more devices to meet growing demand.
