Case Study: Heathrow Airport achieves smoother passenger flow with Microsoft Azure

Heathrow prepares rather than reacts: uses data to deliver airport calm

Heathrow Airport needed a better way to manage the constant variability of a major international hub, where disruptions like bad weather, flight cancellations, and passenger surges can quickly create stress for travelers and staff. To address this, Heathrow used Microsoft Azure and Microsoft Power BI to make sense of real-time operational data across flight schedules, baggage, weather, security, and immigration systems.

Microsoft Azure helped Heathrow extract, clean, and prepare data, while Power BI turned it into live dashboards and alerts for airport employees. The result was earlier visibility into passenger flow changes—sometimes one to two hours in advance—so staff could add resources before problems escalated. This helped Heathrow run more smoothly, anticipate disruption, and improve the passenger experience.
